Lost bookmarks after updating to latest Firefox release

Latest Firefox release update wiped out my bookmarks. Tried to restore a saved HTML version - and it says "this file doesn't include any bookmark data". (This is a "Firefox HTML Document" property type, saved using the BACKUP feature on w/n Firefox itself - using "manage bookmarks".)
