Disappearing emails

In my Inbox, after I've read a new email it disappears. I think this is a problem with Quick Filters, because I can find some of the emails by clicking on the different tabs - attachments, contacts, and so on, but not all of them. If I don't move an email to a different folder as soon as I've read it, the next time I go to the Inbox it's not there. However at the bottom of the screen the bar tells me I've got 42 emails in my inbox, but I can only see a few of them. Where are the rest, and how can I stop this happening?
