Why does'nt firefox remembere the last download folder?
Hi there
Lately I noticed that Firefox no longer "remembers" where the last download of a sort went.
Example, if I downloaded a youtube video I used to put it in a special youtube project folder, and Firefox automatically downloaded the next youtube video to the same folder until I choose a different project folder. (which Firefox rembered from that moment on This worked for different websites as well, Firefox remembered to put a Facebook video in the dedicated Facebook folder.
Since some updates ago this does not work anymore. Now every download gets dumped in the standard download folder or if I want it to be put in a dedicated folder I have to go there and chose that folder over and over and over again.. This takes a lot of time and creates lots of aggravation every time having to sort out the downloads.. After some more updates it still does not work as I was used to.
I have the standard Firefox download folder set on c:\downloads like I have since I started with Firefox 7 many years ago and it always worked, it always remembered where to put the download in the website related download folder. I have tried different settings like "always ask me" but it keeps starting from the standard download folder.
Is there some thing that can make this work again like it used to ? Like a setting in about:config or with some addon ?
Thanks in advance Ned
I use Firefox 52.6.0 (64-bit) on my laptop and Firefox 57.04 (64 bit)

Did you check your General settings to see what is says for saved locations?
Hi Ned, do you mean the download was made through an add-on?
I do not think "WebExtensions" -- the kinds of extensions that run in Firefox 57+ -- are allowed to preset the download location according to your preferences or saved site-specific data. I don't know if that will be added in the future.
@westend In general settings I have set the default folder to c:\downloads like I did in all previous versions.
If I downloaded something It first optioned c:\downloads, But If I changed the download path from there "c:|downloads"to E:\Youtube Firefox remembered that for that particular website like Youtube. and next time it went there automatically every next time. Unless I changed that again.
A download from a different website again it first optioned c:\downloads and unless I changed it to another preferred location..
This is as clearly as I can describe it as it used to be note that I changed the location from the download window II never changed the download folder in settings...
@jscher2000... No I just used the normal process in Firefox.
I just asked if I can get my old function back (that remembers the last website preferred download location) somewhere in About:Config pr perhaps with some add on that can offer me the same functionality..
I download lots of stuff for all kind of research and that I always for every download have to do the same thing , changing to the work folder to get it store there is driving me fracking crazy
In the new firefox somethings changed but absolutely not for the better..
You're having this problem only in Firefox 57-58 and not in Firefox 52 ESR?
Firefox should still remember download folders on a site-by-site basis. It does not store that data on a file type basis, if that's what you meant by "the last download of a sort".
Site Download Data
Could you double-check that Firefox is not set to clear history when it closes, or if you use that feature, that it is not set to clear "Site Preferences"?
- Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
- Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
- Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
- Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it
In the left column, click Privacy and Security. Then on the right side, with the selector set to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" you can make sure there isn't a check for "Clear history when Firefox closes" or, if there is, when you click the Settings button on the right side, that there is not a check for "Site Preferences".
There is an optional hidden preference you can create to turn OFF site-by-site download saving. See this thread for information on that: Firefox 'save picture as' function choses random directory.
