Suddenly cant delete emails in outlook.live.com
Starting this morning I suddenly cant delete or mark emails as read in Outlook.live.com. Even if I open an email, and it appears as read after that, if I refresh or leave the page and come back, its marked as read again.
I tried dropping all add-ons (a kill switch to drop all add-ons and re-activate them is still a feature I feel Firefox needs, I have to click every single one of them every time) to no avail.
I was in the process of writing this question on the Microsoft forums (which is usually like whizzing in the wind) when I thought to try a different browser. I had zero issues and Outlook.live.com worked perfectly normal on Microsoft Edge.
This HAS to be a bug in a recent update in Firefox
Chosen solution
Well, I'm happy to report this issue seems to be resolved. I didn't do anything. It's even possible I haven't restarted this PC in the last two weeks since my last comment. I often have many, many windows open over days on-end doing my job. I like to sit down at the PC and pick up where I left off and not have to locate and re-open a couple dozen programs and windows, so I sleep the PC at night during larger jobs and restart when I have cleaned up the desktop at the end of a project. I DID restart when this issue began, as this has always been the first tech "go-to" with troubleshooting.
My guess is there has been a Firefox update since and I just didn't pick up on it. It always happens when I'm busy and just want the flipping browser to open for me, so it ticks me off, I click away and get back to what I was busy with. There is always a page loading delay the first time opening Firefox after an update. Always at exactly the wrong time for me!
So, my advice for anyone who experiences this problem is to just let it ride. Two weeks after I reported this problem, suddenly Outlook Live with Firefox was working normally, allowing me to mark as read and delete emails once again. In the meantime I could easily go to Edge or Chrome to delete and mark as read.
The problem resolved itself.

Let me go see what happens. Did you tried Firefox in Safe Mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode#search

This disables all add-ons.

I just deleted 6 emails from my inbox and cleared my junk folder with no issues. What security software are you running?
Modified
Just for S&Gs, I'll boot to Win10 and see what happens.
No issues in Win10 for me with Hotmail.
Edition Windows 10 Pro Version 22H2 Installed on 05-Aug-23 OS build 19045.3930 Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19053.1000.0
Are you running Windows home or pro version?
Thanks for the troubleshoot mode. Now I know I can just hold shift and open Firefox in that mode with all add-on's disabled. That's a lot easier than having to click off the 15 add-ons I have!
Sadly, doing this did not resolve the problem. I tried to delete one of the notifications from your replies and it goes away for a second then comes right back.
Windows security appears active and this is actually a company computer as a remote worker and its set up by our tech folks. They have Webroot Endpoint Protection/Webroot Secure Anywhere on it. I have full permission for personal use but no admin credentials.
Windows Edition 10 Pro Version 10.0.19045 (Build 19045)
I just installed the latest security update AFTER experiencing this problem and it didn't help. Haven't wanted to deal with 11 yet.
Again, no problem using Edge (default on this machine, I only use it when something is blocked by Firefox, which happens once in a while on various websites). I can go to Hotmail/Outlook.live on Edge, do what I want, reload the page on Firefox and my changes are represented correctly, I just cant delete anything using Firefox, mark unread without actually opening an email and after opening an email and refreshing the page, that email is now marked as unread again.
This has happened just in the last day/this morning. I cant remember if I checked that account yesterday. It's an e-commerce account for log-ins, shopping, etc.. I use Outlook on the PC for other personal and business accounts, so sometimes I might not even see the hotmail account for a few days.
Thanks
Pro... GREAT! Let's get our GEEK ON! I would test in the Sandbox to confirm. https://www.howtogeek.com/399290/how-to-use-windows-10s-new-sandbox-to-safely-test-apps/
You can also try a different version of Firefox to see if you have the same issue. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/#nightly
I am not comfortable with virtual tech that isn't the tech company that services our machines. Even having them on creeps me out. They likely wont support Firefox though, so either this sorts out or I will have to support Firefox by using Edge to do my deleting for now.
I want to start steering away from hotmail and eventually close that account and set up a private email with my service. I can still have a POP account with them. I hate not bieng able to delete stuff on my phone without it deleting from my PC that my company 365 account does. I guess I'm a Luddite in those regards...or a control freak more likely.
I appreciate your trying to help. Hopefully a future update from Firefox will fix this. It's clearly something with Firefox if I can use another browser no problem and operating in troubleshoot mode still has the same problem.
You say it's a Firefox issue, but I'm not having the issue on MAC, Windows, LINUX, nor any of my Android devices. You're on a work computer, can you replicate the issue on a personal computer? Too many policies in the work environment so I don't even try Firefox at work. To be honest, Chrome with it's Tab Groups and Window naming is far better at work.

Never had a problem until yesterday. I appreciate that you cannot replicate the issue, I get it. I dont have another PC to replicate this with. I use this one for everything, it is in my home. I seriously doubt the tech guys have have gone in and done anything to this PC to cause this, I'm not on a company network, but they CAN access this PC, but generally do not unless I bring an issue to them. I will shoot them an email just to make sure they didn't make any changes. They dont have time to piddle with individual remote PC's unless there is a trouble ticket created.
I say it's Firefox because the issue is when using Firefox. Hotmail works fine for me both with Edge and Chrome. Doesn't that logically point to Firefox as the culprit? It may be just how Firefox has recently configured itself on this PC, I'm not given a choice, Firefox does what it wants and updates and makes it's changes. If I had a wayback machine, a way to revert Firefox to the last version, it might reveal that it was an update, however specific to this PC it may be. It may be this PC but all I know is using Firefox with outlook.live is the only problem I'm having on it and it began suddenly yesterday after years of no problems.
I really do appreciate your effort to try and help troubleshoot this. Something I haven't tried yet is is removing Firefox and reinstalling it from scratch. Not sure it's worth the hassle since I can still view emails with Firefox, I just have to go to another browser to do any maintenance like deleting, marking as read, etc.. This may resolve itself after another update. Like I wrote before, this may be the catalyst that will get me to get that new domain and create my own private e-commerce email account instead of using a free account they track me on and likely sell my info.
Thanks, again.

Glad to hear that the problem resolved itself. Mark this issue as resolved to remove it from our list and have a good day.
This just started happening with me a couple days ago. When I click on an email, it takes me right to reply, rather than being able to see the actual email. I can't delete anything either. However, when I go to work and use Chrome, hotmail works just fine.
Please create a new question for your issue.

Whatever it is, Kristen; it cant be a Firefox issue ;>)

Turns out I'm having this exact same issue since two or three days ago: I can normally access my Outlook mail and can see the list of e-mails just perfectly, but after opening and reading any e-mail and going back to the list, it marks itself as unread almost instantly or after a second, it also happens the same if I try to delete it: it comes back to the inbox list almost instantly.
Already tried manually disabling all of my extensions and opening Firefox in Safe Mode, but the issue remains the same, but if I use Chrome instead, there's no problem at all, I can perfectly mark e-mails as read or even delete them.
Same problem since 2024-03-12, Firefox 123.0.1 (64-bit) on Windows 10 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4046). Yesterday night there was a Windows update. Still works on Google's Chrome. I have disabled all extensions, did not help.
Does it still happen in a new profile? An easy way to test a new profile is to install Developer Edition and see if it happens there or refresh your existing profile. Make sure you stay signed out of your sync account when testing.
Keep in mind my chosen solution, folks. Do nothing except use another browser for Outlook Live to mark read and delete. You can still read emails through Firefox, then pop in through Chrome and do your inbox maintenance. When it happened to me, it resolved itself in two weeks.
You could spend hours doing the hokey pokey, this and that, or just wait and see.
I appreciate the techs and thats why I came here, but on this one, time was the solution for me. Still working fine today.

Thanks a lot! Developer edition worked so I tried "Refresh Firefox" and that solved the problem. I was not aware of this function, very useful and it even restored all open tabs.
