How do I download multiple files and/or complete directories from an FTP server?

I'm running FF V3.6.13 on Win2K SP4 (yes, some of us do still use it), and am trying to download a (large) number of files from an FTP server, but can find no way to select and download more than one file at a time, let alone a whole directory. Even just clicking and dragging saves a link to the file, not the file itself. Is there any way to do this in a quick and simple way?
