My wife keeps getting a popup from Thunderbird for permission to access her Google account. We've both used Thunderbird for years and now she can't send and this is new. Is it legit?

This is normal - you must tell google that you allow Thunderbird to access these things.

Make sure cookies and javascript are enabled. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-yahoo for further guidance.
