I found that my session activity on a secure (logged-in) website was being interfered with. I could not log-out of that website. After I closed Firefox, a notice appeared that an update was in progress. Why should a Firefox update interfere with an active session? Is this an updating issue that needs fixing?

I do agree. Which is why I can't use Firefox at work. Noticed a long time ago that if the update downloads and you don't restart, there will be issues until you restart. At work I use Chrome Beta and see the notification that the browser needs to restart for the update process to complete and I ignore it for some time, but have never noticed any impact while I work. Someone closer to Dev will have to chime in on why not restarting the browser after the update has been downloaded interferes with your current session.
