Forced to use the windows 2000 OS. By release date 24.8.1esr is identical to 31.1.0esr (not working on w2000) and close to 32.0 (newer than 28.0) So, between 28.0 and 24.8.1esr, wich is: - faster - safer - less resources - better rendering - accept more new addons/extensions/plugins - has better chances to become obsolete (die) the latest

I an stucked on windows 2000 for an undefinite period in the future and I wish to be able to use the best browser Firefox has to offer.

I use the PORTABLE VERSIONS, at some point, I could share the same profile between 28.0 and 24.8.1esr. I guess they can share alternatively the same files in the profile folder ?

Chosen solution

If you are forced to choose, use Firefox 28. Firefox ESR is intended for large companies that cannot update the browser frequently, so it only receives security updates. Firefox ESR 24.8.1 is identical to Firefox 24, except that it contains security updates from through Firefox 31. Firefox 28 will contain most of these security updates, and will also contain 4 versions worth of newer features.

However, both of these versions are obsolete at this point. Firefox was redesigned in version 29, and many addons aren't going to work with older versions of Firefox anymore.

Firefox 12.0 was the last version of Firefox that worked on Windows 2000.

See the system requirements for Firefox 13.0 and later versions. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/13.0/system-requirements/

I did read what you wrote! But upon a second reading of what you wrote, I realize I may have gotten confused by the manner you mentioned using Firefox Portable with that "at some point" part.

Mozilla hasn't supported Windows 2000 since the Firefox 12.0 version. Firefox 13.0 and later versions just won't install on the Windows 2000 operating system - without the "unofficial" SP5 that was discussed over here - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2482475 .

Firefox Portable may work [I haven't been able to try it, because I don't have a W2K operating system installed any longer] because it doesn't always need to be "installed" (if you use a Zip build). And Portable doesn't affect the Registry which is one of the issues with W2K on the official version of Firefox.

Since Firefox Portable it is a 3rd party version it isn't supported in this forum. http://portableapps.com/forums/support/firefox_portable

It's funny how many guys can't see the forrest if it is surrounded by bushes ! >Since Firefox Portable it is a 3rd party version it isn't supported in this forum. Blam ! The launcher RUNS Firefox. Just like a more advanced batch or shortcut. The launcher is 3rd party and can launch ANY Firefox version. This versions work or not on w2000.

I will cut the bushes, for you to see the forrest: - NOMATTER WHAT WINDOWS I USE or if INSTALLED or PORTABLE, if I must choose between F.F. 28.0 and 24.8.1esr (one with BIGGER build number and the other with more fixes till 32.0 but lower build number) For this I want an answer, to the FIRST POST QUESTION. If you know the answer, please enlight me. If not, please let those who know to fill the topic

If you wish to tell: - Install latest version, - upgrade your OS to the latest, - we don't support one year old versions of FF on this forum - if FF is started otherwise than 2 click on the exe it's 3rd party and don't concern us, - and other hudred's offtopic stuff, .... please don't use my question to increase your already tremendous number of posted answers.

I've put a question about the forrest, I don't want answers about the bushes !

Still waiting !

Thank you in advance.

Thank you. I will try to grab addons for v28.0 and update them until they stop working. Anyway, I don't like the mods after 28.0. Too much Chrome "flavour" for a Mozilla product

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to customize the appearance in Firefox 29 and later and make it look like older Firefox versions.

  • You can check out the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.
  • You can find extra toolbar buttons and more toolbar settings in Customize (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize)
