Firefox for iOS lets you open multiple tabs, switch between regular and private browsing, and manage how tabs behave and appear.
Note: These instructions apply to the latest version of Firefox for iOS. Make sure your app is updated from the App Store.
View and switch between tabs
- Open Firefox on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the numeric tab icon at the bottom of the screen.
- You’ll see all open tabs in your current browsing mode.
Firefox displays regular tabs by default. You can swipe left or right to move between open tabs.
Use private browsing tabs
Private browsing tabs let you browse without saving your history, cookies, or search entries. To open a private tab:
- Tap the numeric tab icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Private at the top/bottom of the screen.
- Tap the plus button to open a new private tab.
To return to regular browsing:
- Tap Tabs at the top/bottom of the screen.
Note: Private tabs close automatically when you leave private browsing or quit the app by default. To disable this, go to Firefox Settings and turn off Close Private Tabs under Privacy.
Use synced tabs
- Tap Sync to view tabs open on other devices connected to your Mozilla account.
- If you're not signed in, Firefox will prompt you to do that.

Troubleshooting tips
- Tabs not syncing across devices? Make sure you're signed in to the same Mozilla account.
- Missing tabs after app restart? Private tabs are automatically cleared if that setting is enabled.
- Can’t close tabs? Try updating Firefox or force-closing and reopening the app.
