I know this question has been asked before and yes, I have read the article https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-remove-add-on-extension-or-theme, but I cannot get rid of a legacy extension. The culprit is KeepVid Pro (some time ago I had uninstalled the relevant program). There is no remove button, and the link 'More' merely takes me to KeepVid's home page which is of no help. I have tried reinstalling the KeepVid Pro program and then uninstalling it again, but to no avail. I have also tried deleting every single folder and file on my PC related to KeepVid Pro, but this has had no result. Manual removal has failed, as have the steps to remove globally installed extensions. Is there a registry edit that can be used in such cases? Florio

A refresh will do this!

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

This was the only solution I didn't try before, as I thought restoring all my add ons, passwords and Bookmarks etc would be too much hassle. But it wasn't as difficult or time-consuming as I'd expected. Thank you.

Extensions installed globally need to be removed via the settings (Options/Preferences) of the program that has added this extension or this program has to be uninstalled via "Control Panel -> Programs".

You can find the install location of a specific extension in the extensions.json file in the profile folder. You can open the extensions.json file in the Scratchpad and search for this extension. The descriptor field should list its install location.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
