Extra folders in folder pane

A few days ago the left (file) pane went from
- InBox - Drafts - Sent - Junk - Spam - Trash
to
- InBox - Drafts - Sent - Spam - Spam - Trash
I attempted to change the first "Spam" back to the original "Junk"; didn't work. Have no clue why TBird decided to change the file names on its own.
Any information/direction(s) about how to correct this back to the original?

Thunderbird is changing to match industry and mail provider standards. Best if you go with the flow. In other words, you risk causing problems if you go about renaming things on your own.

Thank you for the response. So, if I am to understand what you have posted ("Thunderbird is changing to match industry and mail provider standards. Best if you go with the flow."), having two SPAM files show up next to each other is somehow magically an "improvement"? Makes absolutely no sense to me -- and to consider two SPAM files (rather than a JUNK plus a SPAM folder) directly next to me exhibits a complete lack of logic or rational thinking.
If T'Bird is now "changing to match industry" standards in like manner as Firefox has been doing, then, in like manner for the reasons I tossed Firefox to the trash-heap-of-time and replaced it with another browser I will be needing to decide whether I also toss T'Bird and go elsewhere.

Are you using IMAP? The one that should be receiving the Spam emails is the one used by the server. Usually that one is named 'Spam'. So would be the second 'Spam' folder in the first list.
To tell which is which: In Folder Pane
- Right click on 'Spam' folder and select 'Properties'
It should say something like this example:
- 'Name' as 'Spam'
- imap://username%40gmail.com@imap.gmail.com/Spam
Or if pop something like this:
- 'Name' as 'Spam'
- mailbox://username%40domain.co.uk@mail.domain.co.uk/Spam
If you see something like this:
- 'Name' as 'Spam'
- imap://username%40gmail.com@imap.gmail.com/Junk
If that last part says 'Junk' then you know it's the one that got altered.
Try this:
- In 'Account Settings' > 'Spam Settings' for the account
- Under 'Destination and Retention'
- Select 'Move new junk messages to:'
- Select 'Other' and choose the account and then the second 'Spam' in the list' - I'm assuming the order did not alter.
- Then Exit Thunderbird - wait a few moments and restart Thunderbird.
Did the original Junk renamed as Spam get altered to look like a normal folder ?
I'm here to give you the best technically sound advice possible, not change your opinions about other products or how you think Thunderbird should behave.
What you are seeing may be a bug that is still to be worked on, and not causing you problems. So basically a cosmetic issue. Therefore I'm suggesting that you don't try to resolve it yourself by doing something that could break Thunderbird and make the situation worse.

Also try this:
- Settings > General
- scroll to the very bottom and click on 'Config Editor' button
- It opens in a new tab
- In search type: useLoc
- Look for this line : mail.useLocalizedFolderNames
- If it says 'True'
- Toggle to say 'false'
- then Exit Thunderbird - wait a few moments and restart Thunderbird.
Did this change the folder names back to Junk and Spam ?
