Android version sync account does not retrieve new mail since being out of the USA

DarrylT1

I went out of the USA on May to Ecuador and Peru, and on the same day the Android version of Thunderbird stopped retrieving new email from the server. I have used Thunderbird pointed to the same server on Windows 11 and Android successfully for years. I thought it might be something to do with being out of the country, but now I'm back in the USA, and sync account on Android still does not retrieve new mail that has accumulated since May 4th. I've been following my email using a webmail access so I know there's lots of new mail. I've closed and reopened Thunderbird on the Android, and I've tried sync account with the webmail access closed. I have not yet tried Thunderbird on my windows 11 laptop because I'm still not home yet. Any suggestions welcomed, thank you for your help! Hi @DarrylT1

Have you managed to return home and test the app function from your home state? Some email providers do indeed block imap/smtp client connections made outwith your normal location or home network.

Have you tried testing Thunderbird Android's Imap/Smtp connection to your mail providers servers? Imap - Settings > account name > fetching mail > incoming server Smtp - Settiings > account name > sending mail > outgoing server.

Clicking next on each page will test & validate the connection. Do any errors report when doing so, or prompts to login to your account?

When I returned from South America after posting the original note, I rebooted my phone and it connected and retrieved email okay after that.

Last weekend I went to the next state away from me, I live in North Carolina then I went to South Carolina for 3 days. Very similar problem happening now- new messages won't display and swiping down on the inbox does not show the progress bar of trying to retrieve messages.

I rebooted the phone, and that didn't help. I checked for updates and see that I have the latest Thunderbird version, just updated in the last couple of days. I tried the above steps and there were no error messages reported. But I'm still unable to retrieve new messages from the server using Android thunderbird. I can use a webmail interface through Chrome to see there are new email messages waiting.

How can I get Thunderbird working again and retrieving new email messages?

Thank you!

More information - I have noticed that even though new messages are not retrieved into the inbox, I'm still receiving notifications about new messages being on the server. The downward swipe on the inbox still will not retrieve these new messages into the inbox.

Hi Darryl

What happens when you click the notification to open / read the message in the app. Is the message displayed. Could the message be in the spam, or another folder for example.

Do you have any sort criteria applied on your inbox view? Are you trying to view the email from the Unified Inbox or the account's inbox?

Seeing the notification indicates the email was downloaded.

Yes, the message is displayed. I'm only using a single native inbox, and everything used to work fine until recently.

I did some extensive work using Gemini as a guide, deleting the account, recreating the account, reviewing / adjusting lots of Thunderbird and general areas of my phone, and now everything is working again as it did before. It's hard to tell which Step along the way was the key that restored normal operation.

Thanks for your help!
