filter lists of emails
How can I filter the list of emails in a folder? There's this 'Ctrl-K' search box but does nothing like I want. I just want to filter the displayed list of emails by correspondent. The Ctrl-K system is a baffling mystery, AFAICT you always get a search for 'mentioning' of the search string, whereas a filter for correspondent would be useful too.

select the folder to search, go to Edit > Find > Search messages... In the Search Messages window choose From > contains > name of the correspondant and click "Search"...

Excellent, thanks. I wish that was more visible! No way of making it into a button?
Sadly, no button! But you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + F https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/keyboard-shortcuts-thunderbird#w_search-and-filter-functions
I can never remember keyboard shortcuts. Anyway I don't need to do that kind of filtering very often, usually in /Trash digging something up. Just good to know the functionality is there when I need it.
