thunderbird and virus checker

My Thunderbird email has suddenly become very slow (not usable). However, turning off the Windows 10 real time virus checker restores the fast response time for Thunderbird. This problem just began last week and I was hoping someone has figured out how to make these two applications compatible.

You shouldn't, and don't need to, turn off the real-time background scanner, but you should add the TB profile folder as an Exclusion in Windows Defender antivirus settings. The profile folder location is shown in Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles.

Thank you for the suggestion. The lag in Thunderbird may have marginally decreased after implementing this (adding the TB profile as an exception in Defender), but the response remains so slow that TB is still unusable so long as the Windows real time virus checker is on.
