Version 78.4.0 -- incompatibility with gmail
When trying to create a new email account the following problem was encountered.
Step 1: create a new gmail account at Google. Step 2: verify the new account works via the web interface Step 3: log out and log back in to that account via the web to verify login credentials Step 3: create a new Thunderbird account using that same new email address
See the video below for the problem. I hope there is a work-around or a solution. This problem appears in both new accounts and existing accounts where the password has recently been changed.

This typically happens if cookies are not allowed in TB Options/Privacy & Security. Allow cookies for at least *.google.com.

sfhowes, hello ! It seems I have the same problem than Carswellb58. So i would follow your advice.... Could you tell me what is "TB" in your answer ? Thank you !! Christine
TB stands for Thunderbird. I had set Thunderbird not to accept cookies. Once I took sfhowes' advice and adjusted that, my problem was eliminated. I was extremely grateful for the excellent advice.
I hope this fixes your problem, too.
John
With TB 78.4.0 and windows 10, impossible to login to imap.gmail.com or smtp.gmail.com, be it normal password or Oauth2. This worked yesterday (though with an older version of TB)
I checked and cookies are accepted for all in TB. No clue what to do to changed that. I suddenly lost my ability to check my e-mails with TB68, I upgraded to the latest version just in case, and still not working.
I can still access my e-mails from the webmail, as well as TB 68 on my Ubuntu 16.04LTS
