About once a year suddenly Thunderbird does not recognize my passwords for my two email accounts. I don't know why this keeps happening and how to get the passwords to work.

Generally speaking, if you have not changed or updated thunderbird, and it worked yesterday and not today, that indicates that the problem is being caused by something external to Thunderbird.
