Add Thunderbird to my Laptop

more options

Hello, I apologize I'm not tech savvy at all. Is it possible to access my Thunderbird e-mail, that's currently set up on our HP Pavilion on my laptop? I have a Gateway model GWNC31514-BL. When I attempt it on the laptop, it shows the available config. IMAP and POP3, I don't know the difference so I choose the IMAP, then I get "unable to log in at server, wrong config., user name or password" under that it says checking password. I find I'm on my laptop a lot more than at that the HP. I'd like to still be able to access it on the HP though just in case the laptop breaks down. I've had Thunderbird for many years and I'd hate to lose everything if the laptop breaks. Your help is greatly appreciated!! Sandy Schnabel

Sandy, to remove some of your stress, I suggest making a backup of the HP pavillion. If running 102, just click Tools>Export and create a zip file of your profile. If having trouble setting up the laptop, you can start thunderbird on the laptop and click tools>import and select the zip file you created on HP and it will populate the laptop with identical setup.

Hello David, thank-you for that advice, I went and got a USB drive transferred the zip file there and put it onto my laptop and it went beautifully, I can see everything. Now my problem is it won't take my password. I'm not sure but could it be because I made a password to get into Firefox support? Does that affect my Thunderbird password? Here's the response I get when entering the password, "password for [edited] @comcast.net didn't succeed, mail server comcast.net responded [Auth] 1014. Can you help with this? I apologize for being a pest :( Your help is much appreciated, Sandy Schnabel

Comcast requires you allow access to third-party apps such as TB:

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/third-party-email-access

If you've done this before with one PC, it might be necessary to repeat it for other devices with the same account. Check also that the server settings match the current recommendations:

re : I'm not sure but could it be because I made a password to get into Firefox support? Does that affect my Thunderbird password?

NO. 1. Make sure the computer Firewall has Thunderbird set up as an allowed program otherwise it might not allow access to internet/ports.

2. Access webmail account via a browser Make sure the settings is switched on to allow third party access to email as per info supplied by sfhowes. quote: To provide our customers with additional security, we added a new checkbox to the Xfinity Email website, which may affect your ability to manage your Xfinity email (Comcast.net) through third-party programs like Outlook, Google, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and more.

3. Check server settings in Thunderbird:

Server Type: POP Mail Server

  • Server Name: pop3.comcast.net
  • Port: 995
  • Connecton Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • User Name : full email address

SMTP:

  • Server Name: smtp.comcast.net
  • Port: 587
  • Connecton Security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • User Name : full email address

Password is the same password you use to logon to webmail.

Hi Guys, I tried going in to Xfinity, but my TB e-mail doesn't show up there at all. The account is in my husband's name, my daughter's (yahoo) e-mail is attached to it. My daughter came to help, and thought maybe my e-mail address should be added under the xfinity account. When she did that, my TB e-mails & some of the folders were loaded in the xfinity e-mail. It doesn't appear to be TB at all, I don't know if I should just leave it as it is, or if its even possible to change it over to TB? What do you guys think?

Your help is greatly appreciated!! Sandy Schnabel

Sandy, I am confused. My understanding is you were setting up on PC with Thunderbird, but your latest post indicates to me that the account didn't exist. Maybe it's that I don't know what you mean by 'going in to Infinity.' Did you mean viewing mail online? Just to clarify, Thunderbird is just a tool to access mail via a PC, and is not related to the account itself.

comcast email address accounts are access via xfinity using a browser to see the webmail account.

re :my e-mail address should be added under the xfinity account. When she did that, my TB e-mails & some of the folders were loaded in the xfinity e-mail.

Good that means you got access, so you know your password works.

What you see in that comcast email address webmail account may have no baring on what you see in Thunderbird because you have set up a POP account in Thunderbird. Only the webmail Inbox may have same emails as previously downloaded to the POP account. That assumes you have not set up anything to delete upon pop download. Stop worrying about it, it obviously displays your data.

The point is this - you have to access the webmail account in order to make sure the new checkbox added to the Xfinity Email website has been set to allow third-party programs like Thunderbird to access and download emails and send emails via server. So is that checkbox as shown at the link - is it selected? If no then select it. Maybe it needs reselecting.

You must confirm you have accessed the webmail account for your email address and then made sure that checkbox to allow third party access is selected. That was the reason why you were accessing the webmail account. It sounds like you did get access to the webmail account for your email address, but you did not mention anything about the checking the checkbox to allow third party access. See image below.

Hi Guy just got off of the phone with xfinity. So my e-mail on the tower isn't working either. Apparently when my daughter went in and checked that box, and still couldn't get that to work. She tried to add my e-mail address into the xfinity website and inadvertently changed my e-mail address so when I called them, they don't see [edited] @comcast.net at all. The person I spoke with thinks this is why I can't access my TB at all right now? He said they couldn't fix that, this doesn't seem right to me? I was thinking they could change what my daughter entered back to my old e-mail address and I'll get it back? He said I should reach out to you guys for help with that. The password I had set up was [edited out password].

Let me know please, okay?

Your help is greatly appreciated!! Sandy

Just to clarify, Sandy, Can you access your account online and read mail at the xfinity/comcast site?

more options

Hi David!!

yes, this what baffles me. It's not Thunderbird though, it's Xfinity. Xfinity told me last night that they could not see my [edited] @comcast.net e-mail address. After the call though, I went to shut down the lap top and noticed that the tab says X mail and has [edited] @comcast.net on it as well. New e-mails are showing up in there as well. Is there any hope of getting it back on Thunderbird? What they told me was the people at Thunderbird would need to fix it, I don't know how that's possible though since it shows it's on Xfinity.

Your help is greatly appreciated!! Sandy Schnabel

Sandy, this is a public community support forum and not some sort of private ticket or chat system. So please do not post your full email and password in public unless you want to get more spam or people accessing your email with password. Thank you.

I could not post this note when I edited your previous post due to site maintenance at the same time.

Sandy, your first goal must be to be able to access email online. That is Xfinity's world and they need to help you log on online to your account. Once you can do that, you can set up Thunderbird with proper settings.

The account is in my husband's name, my daughter's (yahoo) e-mail is attached to it. My daughter came to help, and thought maybe my e-mail address should be added under the xfinity account. When she did that, my TB e-mails & some of the folders were loaded in the xfinity e-mail.

So you were actually logging on to your husbands account using his email address and password to see all the 'additional users' which did include your daughters account, but NOT your email address - it was not listed.

I would understand that to mean at that point, your email address was completely independent and not associated with your husbands account. So you should have been logging in using your own email address and your own password.

However, your daughter seems to have added your email address as a second/additional user to your husbands account. I presume your husband has no objections to you and your daughter accessing his account.

Did your daughter use these instructions and set up as 'Viewer' ?

re :Apparently when my daughter went in and checked that box,

So after adding your comcast email address as a second user - it was not set up to allow third party access and then she selected the box to allow it.

re : Xfinity told me last night that they could not see my [edited] @comcast.net e-mail address. Maybe - and this is just a thought - maybe because your email address comcast account has just been added to your husbands account, it cannot be seen as an independent account. Did you do the next stage and logon separately accepting the terms and conditions ?

After the new user account was created, did you then exit your husbands account and log in to https://connect.xfinity.com/ using your email address and password and click the box to accept the terms to complete the email account creation? YES or NO ? - If no then do it now.

re :Can you access your account online and read mail at the xfinity/comcast site? Answer: yes, this what baffles me. It's not Thunderbird though, it's Xfinity.

That response needs clarifying - we are not talking about logging in via the husbands account. Are you now able to go to the following link - enter 'your comcast email address' and 'password' and see all your emails?

Being able to do what is stated above is important - please confirm that is the process you are using. Whilst logged in, when you check the settings that checkbox to allow third party access is still selected ? It's important you confirm this.

Hi Toad-Hall,

I am sorry that I'm not explaining this very well and I'll refrain from listing e-mail addresses.

hopefully to clarify a bit the Xfinity account (internet & TV) is in my husband's name, when he set up the account some years ago, he had to set-up an e-mail address, which he never uses at all. Somewhere along the line, since he never uses e-mail, my daughter set up her e-mail address to receive notifications from Xfinity when needed. So the account is in my husband's name, but my daughter's e-mail address was attached to it.

She went in and checked that security box, went out of the page and then tried again to bring up TB on the laptop. It didn't work though, so she thought maybe my e-mail address needed to be added to the Xfinity account and went ahead and added it there. That's when my e-mails and some of the folders (from TB) populated on the laptop. The tab says Xmail and lists my e-mail address there.

If I want to bring up that e-mail I go to https://connect.xfinity.com/

I hope this is of help.

Your help is greatly appreciated!! Sandy

re :She went in and checked that security box, went out of the page and then tried again to bring up TB on the laptop. It didn't work though, so she thought maybe my e-mail address needed to be added to the Xfinity account and went ahead and added it there.

She accessed your husbands account and checked the security box to allow third party access. It made no difference to getting access to your account via Thunderbird. That would be expected - why - that checkbox to allow access for 3rd party software was for your husbands account/email address, not yours.

Then she added your email address which until this point was not part of your husbands account. It's likely it was a completely separate account until it got added to your husbands account.

But you have not told us if she then logged out of your husbands account and logged into account/email address and accessed the settings for your email address and selected to allow third party access. It's still possible your own email address has not had the 'allow third party access' setup.

re :If I want to bring up that e-mail I go to https://connect.xfinity.com/

Please go to that link then enter your email address and your password and you get access to see only your emails. Please do this now and follow the following instructions to see if you need to setup your email address to be allowed third party access.

  • Sign in to Xfinity Email for your email address - https://connect.xfinity.com/
  • In the top-right corner, click the Gear icon, then select 'Settings'.
  • Click 'Security'.
  • Select the Checkbox under 'Third Party Access Security' to allow third-party programs access to your Xfinity Email. That checkbox must be selected.

Yes that is the link to sign in to see webmail account. You should be using your email address and password to login.

Have you logged in using your email address and your password and have you checked the settings for your account to see if that allow third party access checkbox is enabled ?

I've been told your daughter accessed your husbands email account and set it up to allow third party access, which is not the same thing.
