how to find unread emails that have been wrongly marked as read by Thunderbird?

this has only happened with the new version. first time i opened it up, i could see unread messages disappearing because Thunderbird had incorrectly marked them as read.

i could quite easily lose work because of this, so it's pretty serious. why is it happening, and how can i fix it?

and i used to be able to create a new folder through File > New. but not now. i can create a new "chat account" or "feed account", neither of which are of any use to me at all, but not a new folder. why has it moved, and where has it moved to? and why were we not told?

i really don't like this new version of Thunderbird at all. i'm sure there will be more things that have been messed about with as time goes on. changing appearances and adding new functionality is one thing, but messing with things that work fine and then don't isn't.

is it possible to reinstall the previous version? if so, i'd very much like to do that.

your account is IMAP or POP?

This does sound like an imap synchronization process where mail on other devices is being queried as to the read status and Thunderbird updated to reflect the mails status on the server. This is sometimes caused by mail clients on phones causing mail left on the server to be marked as read when they download it for a POP mail account. But without specifics from the more Troubleshooting information on the help menu I can only comment generically.

i used to be able to create a new folder through File > New.

I wonder if you are trying to create your new folders when the tab you are in does not support folders. Like the account settings, application settings calendar chat etc.

When in a mail tab, I can certainly create a "sub folder" using the file menu, but then all folders have to hang of an existing folder. Like "Local Folders" or an account folder. I suggest you try pressing Alt+1 and then try your action again.

You might also want to try right clicking the existing folder you want to create your new one under. There has been a context menu there for creating folders I think since version 1. I certainly used it in version 2. If you do not have a two button mouse. I suggest you but one. but you can use Command and click to simulate it on your Apple product.

Your profile will have been upgraded for the new version and trying to go back generally makes an unmitigated disaster of missing data and corruption. But this is discussed here in the support article https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dedicated-profile-thunderbird-installation

thanks. it's POP, though i'm not sure how that is relevant. i'm not talking about using any tabs, but the File > New command. yesterday Saved Search wasn't in the list, and today it is. likewise, there were three insignificant looking little dots at the top right of the window which i hadn't noticed when i posted this, and i found i could make a new folder there. but now the three dots have gone!

yes, there is a contextual menu, but it doesn't give you the chance to create a new saved search. it used to. i don't have a mouse, i have a trackpad.

personally i think that trying to upgrade data structure at the same time as upgrading the software is asking for trouble. i know, because i have learnt the hard way from that mistake. apart from anything else, there is now no way back, and that is bad. there should always be a way back. perhaps copying the profile as part of the installation, as well as making sure people were aware of this huge change before messing about with it might have been a good idea, so people could switch back to the version that actually works. or, if we had known the structure was going to be messed with, we could have done that ourselves.

'What’s New in Thunderbird 102' said nothing about this. no warning, no nothing.

i think Thunderbird is in danger of trying to become all things to all people, like Microsoft Word and Apple's iTunes before it. i don't need anything except the ability to send, receive and search for emails. no calendar, no matrix chat, whatever the hell that is, nor tasks. why not just offer the connectivity to other apps that already do that stuff, like Apple's Calendar?

The functionality is there. If you are talking about icloud, but Apple do make accessing the endpoint for caldav as difficult as they possibly can because they like vendor lockin.

This post offer a method to determine the DSID that you are allocated by icloud, but which apple routinely hide. https://askubuntu.com/questions/911567/how-to-sync-icloud-calendar

This addon makes it simpler https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/tbsync/?src=ss As of now the author has not yet updated it for Thunderbird 102. But it will happen as soon as he finds the time I am sure. I have just been reading his support forum, and it would appear he is advocating using the caldav approach for both address books and calendars.
