After the update, the websites I've been visited are all gone, and only the random websites I visited once in a lifetime are present. I searched everywhere and nothing is solving my problem (no, not even browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion). I don't even see them properly on the most visited menu, only some of them are present, and multiple tabs of the same website.

Can anything be done about this? I don't want to use another browser, this one is my favorite of all times. This problem is driving me bananas

Maybe some portion of your history was deleted? The list is calculated based on the number and timing of past visits. If you look in the Library dialog, does it seem that you are missing a lot of history? To open that, you can use either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+h
  • menu > History > Show All History

Unfortunately, Firefox does not keep backups of previous history, so if that somehow got cleared, you probably are out of luck.

One other thing to check: on your desktop, do you see a folder named Old Firefox Data? If so, click inside and see whether its contents are freshly updated (check the file modification dates). We might be able to use some data in this folder to roll back to before the refresh, if that's what happened. Did you find any fresh data?

By the way, if you just did Windows updates, I suggest shutting down Windows and starting it up again. Sometimes after updating, Windows starts up in a strange mode where Firefox has only partial access to its settings files, and that can cause strange symptoms with no logical explanation.

Yes there's a such folder on my desktop. As far as I could see, there's nothing modified in 2016, closest ones are in 2015

I don't think 2015 history data will help you (you probably don't want to roll back that far).

If your more recent history is gone, unfortunately, I don't know of any easy and reliable way to get that back.

The database which stores history and bookmarks together, the places.sqlite file, might have been backed up by Windows in a restore point prior to the recent rounds of Windows updates. To see whether there is a recent copy, you could try this program:

http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/

If you find a places.sqlite file you want to try to use, I suggest restoring it to your Document folder or another place that won't interfere with your currently running Firefox, and then we can discuss how to safely swap it into your profile folder while Firefox is closed.
