I've been using Firefox on Windows for years without any trouble. Now on Ubuntu and using Firefox. I was able to save two urls to the Bookmark list but now find that any url that I want to bookmark does not get bookmarked or listed in the Bookmark category. I have tried various methods, but to no avail.

You'll want to go to

Tools > Options (on Ubuntu, otherwise Preferences in some other Linux flavors) > Privacy

and use custom selections for the settings there. It may be that at present you are in private browsing mode.

Can you report what you've tried so far with those settings?

Did you recently update your system hardware, such as replacing a hard drive and restoring data from a read-only device (CD-ROM) that would result in read-only files that can't be updated. That and additional problems are mentioned in

Bookmarks not saved | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help

https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Bookmarks%20not%20saved

and is probably covered in more depth at

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_not_saved

I have checked the Preferences and I am not in private browsing. I have not changed any hardware recently. I have tried to bookmark a page again but it still doesn't appear on the bookmark listing - its as if I'm locked out. Real hassle as I use bookmarks a LOT and I've never ever had this problem before

In the Firefox I have for Ubuntu, the TOOLS only has an option for private browsing which is NOT turned on. Under EDIT> Preferences there is a PRIVACY section, but this only deals with remembering history and telling websites I do/do not want to be tracked (I've tried both).

Try creating a new profile and see if you can use bookmarks in the new profile.
