I'm under attack. I can't use the internet because of dozens of advertising pages opening. What can I do?

Every time I try to click on a link, sign in to something and generally use the internet, dozens of advertising pages open up. It usually cuts off whatever I'm trying to do eg. I was trying to watch the first episode of a new series that I'd missed but I was signed out after about a minute, time after time. Now I can't get back into it so I'll have to wait for a repeat. Pop-ups are blocked so I'm not sure what you'd call what's happening. I'm at a loss to know how this has happened. My virus checkers and internet security are up to date. Any ideas?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.
