recent firefox update can no longer copy and paste when creating a blog post in Squarespace
recent firefox update can no longer copy and paste when creating a blog post in Squarespace, I have been using squarespace for around 15 years for my websites and I have never seen this issue, Firefox 15.1 installed and all of a sudden when trying to create a blog post in Squarespace, when I right click a text box pop up and it no longer says paste so I can no longer copy and paste text - this is more than a little annoying, you will not be surprised to know that I am now using Chrome to create my posts, there is no issue in chrome. I am a firefox geek! how can i solve this problem, I just did another update from Firefox, the issue remains I have been using computers for 40 year so I am not a novice but software glitches, I am lost

Even though the context menu doesn't have "Paste" active, could you still paste with CTRL+V in the text box, or that also doesn't work?
Actually this works, thanks but it is a pain in neck to keep pressing ctrl v - so much easier just to have paste to come up in the text box - my workaround is simply to use Chrome which is a pain as I have to switch between browsers and I dislike Chrome, I am a firefox geek!
I am not a software geek and I have never encountered this problem before and it started when I got the Firefox 15.1 update (and 2 other minor updates since)the problem still persists and I have wasted hours on this using Grok AI for help (they told me to contact Mozilla support)
Any suggestions?
Thanks Jamie.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, using Ctrl + V only works in basic text boxes and does not work reliably in the main Squarespace rich text editor (contenteditable blocks) where I do most of my work. This forces me to change my entire workflow, adding extra steps and time every time I create or edit a blog post. This issue only started after the Firefox 151 update. Copying and pasting worked perfectly for years before that, and it continues to work without any problems in Chrome on the same computer. A keyboard workaround is not an acceptable long-term solution. Since this appears to be a regression introduced by Firefox, could you please escalate this as a bug and let me know if a proper fix/patch is being worked on? Thank you. Best regards, Jamie
I need help understanding where the issue might be coming from:
What does "does not work reliably" mean? It never works, it only pastes parts / broken / unformatted, it worked but not 10 out of 10 attemps? How many out of 10 then? Or based on the type of source data?
When you go to https://jornki.github.io/ContentEditable/ are you able to paste into the text box there? (Both from the context menu, and keyboard. Both "Paste" and "Paste without formatting" options.)
What content do you paste? Plain text, or some rich form with images and formatting like from Google Docs etc.?
If you paste it here for test: https://evercoder.github.io/clipboard-inspector/ to get back the types, what does it show? (Can you attach a screen shot of that?)
Let me start from the beginning, first of I am not a computer geek, but I have been using computers since 1980, I have been using Squarespace for 15 years to write blog posts and Firefox has been my choice of browser for around the same time.
I have never encountered this issue, ever.
I automatically download Firefox 15.1 update when it came out last week, there have been 2 minor updates since then, they have not fixed the problem
It seems to be a problem specific to Squarespace and when I try to create a blog post which I do daily, for a week now I have tried to paste text (quite often text from other blog posts I have done or from articles and such, when I go to paste by right clicking on my mouse the text box has changed and there is simply no option to copy and | or paste in the ment, 50 times I have tried and 50 times I have failed
When I paste I am just pasting plain text, Images I upload to Squarespace to insert into my posts, so JUST PLAIN TEXT
So I am now doing my blog posts in Chrome where there is NO ISSUE at all, but I do not like Chrome and have never used it as my browser
“When you go to https://jornki.github.io/ContentEditable/ are you able to paste into the text box there? (Both from the context menu, and keyboard. Both "Paste" and "Paste without formatting" options.)” I can paste into the text box and no problem doing paste and paste without formatting
Clipboard Inspector - see screen shot attached
2 images of the blog post I am trying to paste to, one for Firefox and one for Chrome, the right click text box with Chrome is pretty much the text box that USED TO appear in Firefox but no longer
hope this helps
Thanks for the tests! This all yields the expected results. There is something specific Squarespace does in not exposing it can accept pasting. You verified yourself above that using a simple web-standard editable content you have no issues. I see the option missing too in the context menu, however I can paste fine using both keyboard and the "Edit" menu (Restore the Menu bar in Firefox) — in 100% cases.
(The reason is: both the keyboard and edit menu paste at the "cursor position", whereas the context menu can be programmatically influenced by the site scripts to intercept the paste into the app, not just the editing caret, so that's where the compatibility issue lies…)
I'm trying to figure out:
>>> "Unfortunately, using Ctrl + V only works in basic text boxes and does not work reliably in the main Squarespace rich text editor" >> "What does "does not work reliably" mean?" > "when I go to paste by right clicking on my mouse the text box has changed and there is simply no option to copy and | or paste in the ment, 50 times I have tried and 50 times I have failed"
I'd need to understand where the keyboard workaround does not work ("reliably", as you mention) — from my testing there's no issue accessing the pasteboard, so if you're not able to confirm this workaround then the investigation needs to be pointed elsewhere, than just the context menu availability.
Thank you so much for your help.
I tested your suggestion:
Pressing Alt then Edit → Paste works as a workaround., yes it works!
However, this is not what I need.
I do not use Ctrl + V and never have. (and it is not working properly anyway) What I want restored is the ability to right-click and select Paste directly from the context menu in the Squarespace editor — exactly as it worked for the previous 15 years. Since the Firefox 151 update, the "Paste" option has completely disappeared from the right-click menu in Squarespace (while it still appears normally in Chrome and on other sites). Is it possible to escalate this as a bug so the right-click context menu behaviour is fixed in a future update? I would much prefer a proper fix rather than having to use workarounds. Thank you, Jamie
I've been getting all of this info to be able to even start investigating — this just to validate the platform issue — that does not affect actual input/cursor, but only the pointer/element (context menu) — thanks for the help replicating the steps above. This seems to happen mostly on sites behind a login, so it's hard to work on it more swiftly, but some testing is already planned.
The bug is tracked as: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2043569
I still however can't correctly parse the above: "I do not use Ctrl + V and never have. (and it is not working properly anyway)" — in which ways it's not "working properly", could you please elaborate how that paste results differ from your expectations? It doesn't necessarily have to be related to this site compatibility bug report, but might be important piece of puzzle to understand the specifics, if it ends up relevant to the functionality.
Thank you for the follow-up. To clarify the Ctrl + V situation:
Ctrl + V works only if I first click on the “+” to create a new text block in the Squarespace editor. However, in my normal workflow (and how I have worked for 15 years), I do not create a new text box every time. I simply click into the existing main blog post area (whether it is blank or already contains text) and paste directly there.
When I try to paste using Ctrl + V directly into the main content area (without creating a new text block), nothing happens — the text does not appear. This is the same behaviour as the missing right-click “Paste” option. Both only fail in the main Squarespace rich text editor. I hope this extra detail helps with the investigation (Bug 2043569). Thank you, Jamie
Wonderful, thank you. (That confirms the rich editor needs to expose some extra functionality before making the inputs editable as a text. That aligns with the expected model such app might require, so that fits within the working theory.)
Your assistance to help understand the issue is greatly appreciated! This seems to affect many users, so just not being passive and taking the time to reach out and report the issue in such detail has a tremendous impact! Things are already in motion thanks to this. 💟
Thank you for the update. I’m glad the details helped and that this is now being actively investigated (Bug 2043569). I appreciate you looking into this, I am not a geek, I do not understand code but I love Firefox, it really is that simple so, whatever I can do to help
Thank you again
Jamie
