I cannot email a link to any web page from Firefox 22. How can I fix this?

more options

I am unable to email a link to any webpage from Firefox 22. I have tried everything I can find to fix it. Nothing works.

There is no longer the ability to right click and send an email link. The "Email link" in the "file" drop down on the menu bar doesn't work either. I even tried one add on program for emailing links. That didn't work.

If I didn't lose all of my bookmarks, I would reset to the Firefox defaults. I have had to resort to using Chrome to send any links to webpages.

There has to be some way to fix this. Please help if you can.

Thanks

Hi Phillip:

Thanks for the quick response. I just tried the link that you suggested and added it.

Unfortunately, this didn't work either. I tried right clicking on an Amazon.com page. "Email Link" shows up as a choice, but nothing happens when i select it.

I also tried going to the "File" tab at the top of the page and selecting "Email Link". No luck with that either.

I appreciate your help. This is making me crazy.

you could also try to go into the Firefox settings, application tab and set the right action for the mailto:-protocol.

The Firefox reset option should try to retain your bookmarks. It would however be good practice to back them up. However note using reset

A slightly more complicated option but a safer more conservative one would be to create and use a new additional profile.

If you do try that

  • Use an empty folder for the new profile
  • Do not delete or rename it

Make sure that you have set a default mail program properly.

Hi Phillip:

Therein lies the problem. On my desktop computer I have Windows 7 Professional.

When I go to the application tab on my desktop computer, I find "mail to" under the content tab. Next to it, it says "use Thunderbird" as default.

On my HP laptop, there is no "mail to:" listed anywhere under the content tab. Both systems are running Firefox 23.

How could "mail to:" be listed in the content on one computer and not the other if both are running Firefox 23? Thunderbird works fine on both computers for sending and receiving email. It is only the "send link" or "mail to" function that won't work on my HP laptop computer.

I checked the default programs on both computers. Both are the same for mail.

Thanks for your continued help.

Tom

You can check the network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs on the about:config page.

If network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs are user set (bold) then right-click and Reset them to the default value.

Hi Greypuss, mailto is one "word" so don't include a space when using the search box above the list to filter it down.

Sometimes the file that stores those preferences (sometimes called download actions) becomes corrupted. You could try renaming it and having Firefox regenerate it to see whether that helps.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename mimeTypes.rdf to something like mimeTypes.old

Restart Firefox and see whether there now is a mailto item.
