Sections of drop-down menus that overlap on to desktop remain partially visible on desktop permanently
I am running Firefox 15.0.1, Windows 7 Professional X64, with (importantly) the Windows 7 Basic Theme with a solid Desktop colour. Whenever a drop-down menu (e.g. Bookmarks) extends below the bottom of the Firefox window, overlapping on to the Desktop, AND you click away from that menu (don't select an item), the menu section on the Desktop remains visible, even after Firefox is closed. If the Firefox window is positioned so that the menu displays ABOVE that window, clicking away clears the entire menu except that small section that overlayed the Firefox window's caption bar.
This behaviour does not occur with other applications, e.g. Thunderbird, Office programs, etc. It is reproducible on a W7 Home Premium X64 machine, but not on an XP machine with a similar Desktop appearance (solid colour). If the W7 installation is changed to one of the Aero themes (Windows 7, Architecture, Landscapes, etc), the problem disappears. It would appear to be applicable only to the Basic and High Contrast Themes (to a greater or lesser extent), especially where a solid Desktop colour is involved, but as mentioned above, only with Firefox. With those themes, if a bitmap image is used (e.g. with standard Windows 7 Basic), then only Firefox's window border is not 'refreshed'.

Do you by any chance have a program called "Evernote" running in the background? I have the exact same setup as you, and curiously enough, this problem only occurs when I have Evernote running. To make matters even stranger: when I power up Firefox first, THEN evernote, it is much less likely to happen (and it takes longer as well). I don't know what it is that triggers these two to start fighting on the playground: it seems to be entirely random.

Many thanks for your prompt response. Unfortunately, your suggestion does not apply in my case. I had never heard of Evernote until you mentioned it. In case this software had somehow been installed automatically (without my knowledge), I have scanned the \Program Files and \Program Files (x86) folders, searched the C:\ drive for evernote.*, and even searched the Windows Registry for a mention of evernote, all unsuccessful.
Cor-el, your suggestion that I disable hardware accelleration solved the problem immediately. Very many thanks.
This is the first time in 20 years of using computers that I have needed to use a Support Forum (not boasting, I just am stubborn and like to solve things myself). After spending hours experimenting with this situation, it was resolved within 13 minutes by you!
