Using "Manage search engines..." with Firefox 8.0 (Win7-64) does not save my search engine keywords

I have a long list of search engines with customized keywords. I created a couple of my own search engines by duplicating existing ones and making a few modifications in my AppData->Roaming->Mozilla->Firefox->Profiles-> profile.default->searchplugins. They worked for a while, and broke at the next auto-update, because I didn't disable that for those.

But since installing the Firefox 8 update, I haven't been able to make any new keywords. I tried deleting the "search.json" and "search.sqlite" files hoping Firefox would fix the problem when rebuilding it's database, but now I have no keywords, and cannot create any new ones.

Is there a fix, or do I need to delete my profile and start over? If so, is there a way to automatically including all of my extensions?

Thanks!

The keyword are stored in search.sqlite, so if deleting that file didn't solve the problem then you may have a corrupted profile or you have security software that is causing problems.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
