My firefox browser freezes completely and stops PC from working. Current remedy is to use another browser having switched off and re-booted PC. Any thoughts as this has started happening frollowing update to version 118

Hold down the Shift key while starting to get into Troubleshoot Mode and then disable hardware acceleration.

I solved the problem at least for my setup by "refreshing firefox".

I had the same problem except I could still kill the firefox application in the task manager and fully rebuild the tabs. Freezes occured whenever a file selector window was about to appear e.g. on right clicking on a image to download it or on attempting to change the download folder in firefox settings. I use Windows 10 Firefox 118.0.2 I have unsuccessfully

  • re-newed places.* files
  • switched off hardware acceleration
  • turned off all active add-ons
  • started in throubleshoot mode

I could eventually stop the freezes by pressing "shift" while starting but then selecting "refresh firefox" instead of "open". This removes (among other things) all add ons completely: no freezes. Then I installed my previously active add ons (adblocker and dontCareforCookies): still no freezes. I hope it stays that way.

Same happens with version 119. Never had this happen before. Uninstalled and clean installed several times with no luck. After a few starts it freezes (for a minute or two) even with opening on a new window. Almost useless right now. Any clues on how to fix?

That did not work for me. Freezes come back after a while

After refreshing your Firefox profile, do not sign into your Sync account or make any changes. If it continues to work, make changes slowly so you can identify which change is responsible.
