For the last several months I have been receiving a continuous "server not found" and/or "we're having trouble finding that site" error in Firefox. I currently have Firefox 91, but I first noticed this issue sometime in the mid-80s (don't know the exact update where I first saw this behavior). It occurs fairly continuously during regular web browsing across every single website -- not on every single page load, but I'd guess every 2-3 page loads I receive the error. Upon refresh, usually one but sometimes it takes two or three, the page loads fine. I've even noticed the error with the Pocket extension, where clicking the save page to Pocket button often gives an error on the first click, but clicking a second time works fine.

This issue has been mentioned several times on this forum and I have tried every single troubleshooting step I can find, yet the issue persists.

I do not have the issue on Safari, Chrome nor Opera and have no connectivity issues on other apps. I do not have a firewall enabled and am not using proxies nor a VPN (at least during troubleshooting).

I have tried the following:

  • restarting
  • uninstall and reinstall Firefox entirely
  • run in Safe mode (disabling all add-ons)
  • disable hardware acceleration

Today I even tried Waterfox to try to get away from the affront to design that is the Proton UI which apparently can no longer be disabled as of Firefox 91. My version of Waterfox is built on Gecko 78 and has the exact same issue that I'm seeing in Firefox.

This issue has made Firefox entirely unusable. I'd really love a fix, but I can't keep wasting hours of my life troubleshooting an issue that's not going away. I'm a contractor and I'm losing income and working hours on this. I hate Google and Chrome for a lot of reasons but at least they've built a browser that works.
