Revert FF75 search bar

I've changed the settings found in this thread to remove the suggestions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1283813

I also want to revert the stupid focus effect on the search bar. This is a classic case of "don't fix what isn't broken". I'd love to know if the people making these decisions at Mozilla actually use their product. From my experience in large orgs with product owners, I'd bet my entire paycheck that they don't.

This is the new design for the Firefox address bar.

I've created some userChrome.css code to address the annoying growing and shrinking of the address bar, if that's a feature that you don't like. You can download the code from here.

If you've never used userChrome styling modifications before, refer to How to Create a userChrome.css File for more information.

Hope this helps.

NOTE: The code in the link must be located at the top of the file to work properly if your userChrome.css file already has content in it.

Wesley,

1. Applied the code in userChrome.css and userContent.css 2. Made sure FF is looking for these files

No change, unfortunately. Did I miss something?

Is the toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets preference in about:config set to true?

Some other people on Reddit had some issues with the code too, but everything seems fine on every system I've tried.

Just double checked - it is indeed set to true

Just tried the code from here too: https://old.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/comments/fwugp4/megabar_userchrome_snippets/

No change that I can see.

Make sure to add this code to the TOP of your userChrome.css file, after the document declaration. Wesley is the bomb for helping me troubleshoot this and for providing the code.

@Mozilla: the community should not have to be doing this kinda stuff to fix your dumb design decisions.

That enforced and intrusive Search Bar is absolutely awful and very patronising. I already have a separate Search Box in the toolbar as I don't want to use the Address Bar for searches. MY CHOICE! This new ugly feature is now "pushing" one on me there whether or not I want it. And furthermore I don't want to have to go through endless steps just to fix it. It should have been optional in the first place. This is bullshit!

100%.

This was found in about:config by some users on Reddit. Change the value to false. This will also undo this idiotic design choice.

Hi cmbond23!

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.

If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

Hi dexter. Thanks, I tried that. It did get rid of the ugly expanding action, but the Address Bar still insists on working as a Search Bar, which I have always had switched off as I hate it.

Hi Wesley, Thanks. The criticism wasn't aimed at you personally and I presumed that the devs would read these threads, but I'll do as you suggest and send feedback. I did try your toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets suggestion also, but no change.

Ahh, I misunderstood that part. My apologies.

Try this?

Tried both of those. Thanks! It's stopped working as a search, though still looks the same. Why they insist on imposing it upon us rather than offering it as an option is beyond me. The same sort of crap that Facebook pulls as it righteously asserts that it knows what we want better than we do when it clearly does not.

I agree. They should have options to revert design choices if people want. I’d recommend digging around in about:config. That will probably be your best bet.

Aye. Am having a look. Thanks for your help!

Agree with other posters. This is annoying when already chosen to use separate search bar. It overshadows bookmarks for onw thing. Please provide option to disable, or if search bar is set as preference then auto disable the focus feature.

However, it's unlikely to happen because this suggestion has already been discussed and denied by the developers.

We're all just venting at this point. Would love to know why the developers think they know what's best. Clearly there has been some vocal outrage by at least a small portion of the community that actually cares.
