I go to a website (DemocraticUnderground.com) and people post articles and messages. They often post tweets. They show up as images and words. But on this firefox on ubuntu, they are just "link to tweet". Who needs to go through another step every time someone posts a tweet they saw. Is it a setting I've missed?

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows the shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar in case Content Blocking is blocking content.

  • click the shield icon for more details and possibly disable the protection

You can check the Web Console about what content is blocked

Hey pdsimdars

It looks like Firefox's built-in Content Blocking is preventing those tweets from loading as you'd expect.

Content Blocking is intended to help protect your privacy, but when it does cause on issue on a specific website you can turn it off.

There's more information here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/content-blocking#w_turn-content-blocking-off-on-individual-sites

The easiest way to fix this would be to go to DemocraticUnderground.com and then click the shield icon in the address bar and click "Turn off blocking for this site". Full instructions are in the link above.

Hope this helps!
