What happens with version 60 from getthunderbird.com ?

Wayne, thanks for the try, but v60 gives exactly the same error: login failed. But I can definitely login directly on the website with the same password.

What actually happens ? Does it timeout? Do you get a message saying password is wrong? What error message do you get; word for word?

Does it connect, say there is messages, but not download anything ?

What Anti-Virus product are you using?

Have you checked your Firewall (may be part of AV product)? Do not switch off Firewall, but Thunderbird must be an allowed program.

When I enter tbird, I get my e-mail password prompt. After I enter it, the progress bar at the bottom goes solid green for ~30 seconds, then I get an error pop-up that says: Login to server pro.softhome.net with username <my id> failed. (Retry) (Enter New Password) (Cancel), see attached screen snip. I use Norton Internet Security and tbird is listed as an allowed program. I can login to softhome through their web interface so I know the password is good. I've asked them for support, but heard nothing back, so I tried asking here. As I said this started happening suddenly a few weeks ago with no (intentional) change in configuration on my part.

First check that Norton is not confused about what version of Thunderbird you are using.

• Exit Thunderbird.
• Access Norton's Firewall.
• Remove Thunderbird, ok it.
• Access firewall again and reset Thunderbird as allowed.
• then start Thunderbird.

If still not working....

You mention the password is ok but the error pop up says username. The username should be your full email address.

Check to see what you have got stored in Thunderbird.

• 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab
• click on 'Saved Passwords' button
• click on 'show Passwords' button.
• Look at the 'username' for both imap and smtp lines.
• right click on each line and select 'Edit Username'
• completely clear what is stored and carefully type in your full email address.
• then check the password you have got stored.
• If there is any error, use the right click and select ' Edit password' to edit or retype.
• click on 'Close'
• click on 'OK'

Restart Thunderbird.

Please report back on results.

If this also fails, please post the following information. In Thunderbird

• Help > Troubleshooting Information
• Do Not select checkbox to include account names.
• click on 'Copy text to clipboard' b utton
• In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste'
• You can edit/remove all info on fonts and printers, but do not edit anything else.

  I did the bit about removing Tbird from Norton and re-adding it, No change.
 Regarding my user name, on softhome, the user name is just the portion ahead of the "@softhome.net". That is what I login in with on their website and that is what has worked with Tbird for over a decade. Changing the username to add the @softhome.net get the same login failed message.
  I went into the Options/Security/Passwords form and deleted all the stored passwords. I have Tbird set to make me type in the password every time anyway. Still no change.

  Below is the information I copied from the Troubleshooting form. Note the character count is too high so I'm posting that as a separate reply.

  I generally think this is actually a softhome problem, but there support e-mail has never replied to my request for help.

The error message could also mean the username and password is ok but not for the server settings you are trying to use.

Sadly softhome webpage help is poor.

Locating any info on imap is virtually impossible.

I would start off by seeing if you can contact softhome and asking what the server settings are for imap and smtp. So you can check all is correct.

I cannot find anything that uses 'pro.SoftHome.net'.

  I started out sending e-mails to the softhome support but have never received any reply. Yes I know the help pages are worthless. The mail server addresses are what I have been using for the last several years. If they quit working, I assume it is because the softhome names changed. My only other hope was that someone had already discovered some bug in the Tbird update that I got and would have a work around.
  I guess I'm stuck with their clunky web-mail interface if I want to keep this address. Unfortunately this was my "throw away" account given to all the businesses. So if I switch I'll have to update my e-mail address on several dozen websites. Sigh. . .
