Since installing Firefox Quantum (v57), the font size on ALL dialog boxes on all browsers on my wife's Windows 7 laptop has become too small to read.

Note that this affects dialog boxes on not just Firefox but on other browsers too.

This would seem to imply that a default Windows setting has been changed in the Registry, but we cannot find out what / where this would be.

The Display option is set to 150% in the Personalization settings, none of the Advanced Appearance Settings seems to be any different to those on my laptop (where the dialog box font sizes are still OK), and there have been no other Windows / software updates applied since Firefox Quantum was installed.

Restoring back to an environment before Firefox was updated is not an option, so we're looking for a solution that will allow my wife to see what's on dialog boxes.

Thanks!

I don't see how Firefox could affect other applications. Did the overall screen resolution change somehow?

In case it makes any difference, you could remove a Firefox settings file that governs windows and dialog sizes and positions. Here's how:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like xulstore.old. If you see a file named localstore.rdf, rename that one to localstore.old.

Start Firefox back up again. Do windows display normally?

After this, if you prefer to show the Menu Bar or Bookmarks Toolbar, you'll need to re-enable those from the toolbar list. Either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list.

We don't understand why it affected other software too, as there have been no screen resolution changes made to my wife's laptop.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, which we'll try later today.
