i used to right click on gallery photos, and select open in new tab, which would do just that. Now it opens a blank tab and windows photo viewer.
That was many versions ago...
Then in more recent previous versions it would open the picture but also a blank tab.
Now in windows 10 ver 47.0.1 it opens a blank tab and windows picture viewer.
Going to tools - applications - jpg, and trying to select other... and put firefox.exe into it does not work.

What gallery is it? Does it have a custom right-click menu?
Firefox's built-in right-click context menu for an image doesn't specifically have an option to open the image in a new tab. However, if you hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard while clicking View Image, that should display the image in a new tab.
