Using Thunderbird 24.6.0. When I click on the “Write” button to start a new message, the text from a previously deleted message appears automatically in the body of the message without any input from me. Likewise, when I right-click on a web page (in Firefox) and select “Email link”, the same previously deleted message appears, followed by the desired link (url). Have reinstalled Thunderbird 24.6.0., but same thing occurs. (Did NOT delete Thunderbird before re-installation, for fear of losing settings and/or mail.) In case it matters, the unwanted text that appears automatically in the new message (Write) box, is the same text I used to create a template immediately before this problem started happening.

Any help from a knowledgeable person would be appreciated.

Check no add-ons are causing a conflict.

'Help' > 'Restart with Addons disabled' then click on Write.

If the Write new message is empty then one of the add-ons is the culprit.

Please report back so I can rule this out.

Close Write message. Close Thunderbird. Backup profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

Uninstall Thunderbird. Control Panel > Programs and Features. select 'Mozilla thunderbird and click on uninstall.

If it shows two versions, uninstall both.

The Thunderbird program and your Thunderbird profile with emails are not stored in the same location. Uninstalling should not effect emails. Create a backup to cover all bases.

Then download a fresh version from here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all.html

Then reopen Thunderbird and click on Write. Report back on results.

Although I sincerely appreciate your effort, this did not help. I carefully followed your instructions, but the unwanted text of a previously written message still appears when I open the "write" box to start a new message.

For what it's worth, I too thought this would work, but did not want to try it without your advice that it would not delete my profile. I also downloaded and installed MozBackUp. So not all was lost.

Any other ideas? This is very frustrating.

The unwanted text that appears is an earlier version of an actual template I saved. The template appears to be working fine. To create the template, I prepared a normal message (This particular template contained links to other web sites), saved as a template. I have no idea if this is relevant.

You found it! Following your advice, I disabled all of my addons & restarted Thunderbird. To my delight, the unwanted text had disappeared when I clicked on the “Write” button. By trial and error, I later discovered the culprit to be the Smart Template 4 addon. It may work well for others, but caused a problem for me.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your interest, help, and prompt replies. You are a very knowledgeable person. It is people like you who “pass it forward” who preserve the Internet custom of sharing knowledge & help, but not for profit. And many of us are better off for your efforts. Again - Thanks.

Check you are using the current version: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/smarttemplate4/?src=userprofile

Perhaps you had chosen a setting that was overriding Thunderbird.

Good to hear that you had located the cause of the issue and can now use Write.
