I am sure there is a CTRL/ALT or similar combination which reduces the text to window size

Something is weird with your keyboard. CAPS Lock on?

Check whether your zoom level is higher than normal. You can reset back to the default using either

  • Ctrl+0 (that's a zero) or
  • View menu > Zoom > Reset

Does that help?
