Tbird frequently hangs (for less than a minute, usually) while sending, and almost always times out sending even relatively small attachments.

As often as not, Tbird hangs while sending even small emails. They go through after less than a minute (usually). However, if there is an attachment (always with a jpg, often with a relatively small pdf doc or Word file), I almost always get a "timed out" message. My settings are correct, per my Internet provided (Whidbey Telecom). It may be relevant to say that if I copy a picture directly into the text box, it usually goes through just fine. It's only when I do it as an attachment that it fails. Any hints? Any questions? Thanks

This can happen if your antivirus scans outgoing mail. What is the AV, and its mail settings? In general, the TB profile folder should be excluded from AV scans.

Thanks for the answer, but that's not the problem. I use my PC almost entirely for historical research at a handful of trusted sites, so I've never installed an AV program (and have never been infected). It is something specific to Thunderbird I think, because both my phone and my Kindle Fire's email program do not have the same problems. I am using the latest version, but the problems persist with every update. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

You might find it useful to go through this list of performance factors:

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems

Add-ons and extensions don't seem to be the problem, but I ran Task Manager (Win 7) and it shows that Tbird is using, at the moment, nearly 270,000 K of memory just running in the background. Not sure if that is relevant, but only Adobe Acrobat Reader uses more, and Nord VPN is close. Obviously, I'm not a techie, but perhaps you could advise me if that is normal memory use for Tbird, and if not, how I can possibly thin it down. Thanks again.

That's not an excessive memory usage by TB. I've run TB on a 32-bit OS with 2GB RAM without hangs or slow responses. You should go through the list and see if anything like Windows search or global TB search is the source.

Thanks, sfhowes. I'll work away at it. That's a great looking mountain goat!
