Firefox constantly not responding

ES

I started noticing that Firefox was giving me a lot of "not responding" freezes the past couple of weeks. The past couple of days I basically cannot access Firefox at all - constant, immediate freezing. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling (multiple times), disabling hardware acceleration, running troubleshooter mode (still freezes! if it opens at all!), deleting profiles, restarting my computer, etc. I've done just about everything I can find online about this issue. Nothing has worked. I have no issues with Chrome or Edge.

Any suggestions??

Hi ES, Please take a look at this KB: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding

Would please provide you operating systems info, is it up to date?

Does Firefox freeze if you disconnect from the internet, reboot your computer and then open the Firefox page about:about ?

Edit to remove space in about:about

I'm on Win 11 Pro (25H2, if that matters), up to date barring an update that I just got today (in the process of downloading it now).

Firefox freezes immediately if I try to disconnect from the internet, reboot, then open Firefox again. I've tried most of the steps in the linked support page already:

  • Create a new places database - file to be renamed do not exist
  • Hardware acceleration - turned off, freezing still happening
  • Clear download history - did, no effect
  • I've been trying to change the download folder like suggested but I literally can't get there as Firefox keeps freezing immediately after launching (it's been a slog getting it open long enough to make all the other changes)

ES, let's wait untill windows updates, then reboot and try again. Btw what if any antivirus software, is it up-to-date?

Having a similar issue. Windows 11 Pro 25H2 , up to date as is Firefox. No issues until a few weeks ago. Firefox will start fine and seem to be OK after a couple of tabs are open. Then , in the top bar , I see "not responding". After a couple of minutes , that clears and all seems normal. But , upon exiting Firefox , it seems to hang and eventually results in a crash report being sent. No clue why this is happening.

Hi rivulus, please recheck windows is fully updated, any antivirus program? is it also updated? Please follow Paul's instructions to provide the crash reports:

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash. The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.
  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A list of Submitted (and Unsubmitted, if any) Crash Reports will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Submitted Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.
Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report. (Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Thank you for your help! More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Hi rivulus, answered you 3 hours ago, Mods apparently need to review, sorry for the delay.

Paul would you prefer to take this case?

Post Windows update, still experiencing the same behavior. Antivirus is just Defender, is up to date. I double checked the firewall settings and Firefox is an allowed app already.

Hi ES, would you please follow Paul's instructions above and check for any crash reports.

I cannot provide crash reports as I cannot interact with Firefox to get to that page. It is fully unresponsive from the moment the window opens.

Windows is up to date as of 9/14 as is Firefox. All crash reports to date have been submitted.

I’ve had this issue too. Try disabling extensions, clearing the cache, and updating Firefox. If it still happens, starting Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode can help identify the cause.

Thank you Rivulus, please follow Paul's instructions to post the Report IDs here in this forum so we can review them: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1604214#answer-1847711
