Is there a setting to shut down firefox processes when exiting the browser

If I close the firefox browser, and later reopen it via my taskbar tab, I am told that firefox is already running and am asked if I want to shut it down before opening a new set of firefox tabs. Well, yes, I do want an app to shut down when I am done using it and not run in the background. Is there a setting for this?
