sync problem; then gmail folders changed to 0 messages after folder repair, but still a big file
I started having issues syncing to gmail. After a bunch of other efforts, I tried the Repair Folder button. It then showed 0 messages, however the file size was still very large.
I does not seem to be able to sync with gmail, but there are no indications other than it gives up.
I finally gave up trying to fix it (too many variations to list) and removed the gmail account, then recreated it.
It still won't show any gmail messages on tbird. However, I can send a message, so user/password is correct. It's a default imap setup. All of my other accounts are syncing properly.
Tbird 52.4.0.
After posting the original message:
I noticed that the tbird window with the email that was successfully sent was stuck. "Copying message to Sent folder..." It has been that way for 15 minutes. Tbird is still operating normally other than that (and all the gmail stuff).

Addition to the problem:
It seems that Outlook.com/hotmail.com are also now having problems.
gmail is imap, all others are POP.
I have quite a few other accounts that I have been using for testing, all POP, that are syncing fine.
There is no indication of an error when the failure happens. In the status area it says "Connected to pop-mail.outlook.com...", and 30 seconds or so later the message disappears.
This also happens with Tbird in Safe Mode. I have not been able to get any log data.
Check in the error console (ctrl+shift+J). Clear it when you open it. it is truly full of mostly useless information. then attempt to get mail on the account. Any new errors in the console that look interesting, especially SSL/TLS and certificate errors.

Check in the error console (ctrl+shift+J)....
I looked there before and tried to get some info, but: nothing.
When I opened it this time I saw that "Content Security Policy: Directive ‘frame-src’ has been deprecated. Please use directive ‘child-src’ instead," had occurred twice, but I don't think it's related. Trying to get the mail again didn't cause any new entries.
All of the Console options are checked except CSS warnings, so I don't think I'm missing anything.
It's almost acting like a bad password, but there is no indication of that or anything like it. I even experimented yesterday on the gmail side with changing the username to a bad name and it acted the same, which was a big surprise. It seems like a big clue, but I had forgotten about it until writing this paragraph.

For those of you following along, this has some addition thoughts and notes about what is going on. There was a big change.
Maybe there's a clue in this sidebar: I had noticed a few weeks ago that connections with Hotmail, but more with Gmail, had become very slow. They eventually succeded, so it was just an annoyance.
Back to this problem, I disabled my anti-virus software, Avast, and getting mail still didn't work for Gmail or Hotmail. There was no change in the symptoms.
A little later (while still disabled) it suddenly started working, but Thunderbird had forgotten the password. It was downloading 4000+ gmails, and in the middle of that I turned Avast on again, which had no effect. It continued to work after the virus check was enabled, occasionally downloading new email, and then much later it stopped working again.
The fact that email continued to work after Avast was fully enabled was verified multiple times, so while there is a temptation to blame the virus software, it's very iffy in my mind. For one thing, there were working accounts at different URLs that were using the same protocols and ports as Hotmail/Live while it was broken.
There was one other very odd thing: I started getting console message during this process. When email is broken, it seems that console messages are also broken.
There may be multiple bugs: - No indication that failures are occuring on console. - No indication that a password failed when it is in that mode. - Non-reported timeouts when accessing certain accounts. - Password loss at some point in this process.
The only console messages that seemed like they might have applied were these two. Useless to me, but maybe helpful to someone else.
