Can instructions to reset password be sent to my gmail account?

My computer had to be reloaded with windows. Now when I try to get into Thunderbird for my email, it asks me for my userid and password or to create a new account. If I cannot get into Thunderbird, how can I get instructions returned so that I can recover from this situation?
