Ever since the last update EVERY TIME I load now that damn yahoo ad pops up. I DO NOT want yahoo. If this is not fixed I am gonna start using chrome. I don't like it either, but at least they didn't sell their souls!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also. I have two users set up on my computer. On one side, my side, I get that FREAKING goal.com ad for the soccer. Yet on the other side it is different. Seeings as I also hate soccer, I would love to be able to get that chit off!

Let me see if I understand this:

Q: Are you are using the built-in Firefox home page (the one that you can display by typing or pasting about:home in the address bar and pressing Enter)?

If yes:

The "snippets" that the page displays change over time, sometimes even if you reload the page (Ctrl+r). If you want to suppress the display of snippets, you can do that. Here's a thread with more information: Why does my firefox start page icon have a long flaming tail all the way around the globe?

If no:

Is the problem that an unexpected page has taken over for your home page? Here are some suggestions for that:

(1) Double-check your home page setting in the Options dialog. This article has the steps: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

(2) If that is okay, what page do you get when you click the Home icon on the toolbar (or open a new window using Ctrl+n)?

  • Correct home page. In that case, your Firefox shortcut might be hijacked. You can check the "Target" line by right-clicking the shortcut > Properties > Shortcut. For 64-bit Windows, it should just say the following, no extras at the end:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

Another Windows 8 user said he had to unpin the shortcut from the Task Bar to check Properties. Not sure whether you would need to do that.

  • Wrong page. In that case, please investigate the possibility of a bad extension. (I'll detail that further down this reply.)

If the problem an extra tab about the update that would have a different solution, but I can't recall it off the top of my head.

To investigate a possible bad add-on, I suggest starting here:

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

If the goal.com issue is the social sidebar from back around the time of the World Cup, see this article for steps to disable or remove that service: Add social features to the Firefox sidebar.
