Please show us a screen shot. The occasional donation request is in its own tab which can be dismissed and does not interfere with normal Thunderbird operation.

You might instead be seeing the default Start Page, which can changed or disabled at <Settings | General | Thunderbird Start Page>. It also doesn't interfere with accessing your email. When you open any message, the start page is replaced by the contents of that message.
