I can't reproduce your issue in v153.0.2esr but I am using a Mac. Does this problem persist when you start Thunderbird in 'troubleshoot mode'? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-mode-thunderbird

Starting Thunderbird in troubleshoot mode does not solve the problem. Nor does a reboot.

I downgraded back to 140.13.0. Everything works now.
