firefox o.k., but thunderbird is dead.

my dears, maybe you say what can I do or - you repair it? after the summertime (I didn't use my laptop during 2 months) the laptop (2 years old, well groomed, but often used) was o.k. including internet, firefox and unfortunately: gmail-cloud(?) for mails, but thundebind can not connect with imap.google.something anymore. but I need my thunderbird, only there is an address list with more than 900(!) addresses in logical groups! I am mailing now per gmail, but there I can not contract my fotos for sending etc. how can I activate my thunderbird? maybe I download it once more, but what will happen wih the "old" one and the more than 900 addresses? how can I copy(?) or emigrate(?) or like this my addresses? thank you so much. elisabeth

Hi Elisabeth Downloading Thunderbird again will not make any difference, but if you have left it without updating for a long while you should back up your profile - making a copy from time to time is good practice anyway. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data That way your address book is safe.

This is a forum of volunteer helpers, so we can't repair for you but can direct you to helpful resources and advice.

Please send the exact error message that you see from Thunderbird, so that someone can investigate further.

Meanwhile, you need to make sure that you are using the right server and password to connect to Gmail. Those should not change but sometimes the email provider changes the rules. Are you using 2 factor authentication / 2 step verification / OAuth2? Perhaps Thunderbird does not have the latest passwords - check that the password you use online to log in to Gmail is the same password Thunderbird is using.

@eaWaldmann: What TB version do you have? Anyway, you might try to force TB to connect again to the server by deleting old passwords: for TB v78 you might delete all saved passwords - Options - Privacy & Security -> Passwords and also check/ativate the check-box for "accept cookies", restart TB and try again... for TB <78 you might use SSL/TSL instead of OAuth2

my dear, thank you, but I am an old woman and don't even understand all these v78 SSL etc. I only know that my firefox and thunderbird are the ewest update, the laptop is well controled by a not free mc afee = serious, and I think I don't have any password for thunderbird and firefox! my password for gmail is o.k., I can mailing from the gmail-cloud (or what). but thank you.

SSL - is the connection security option that Thunderbird (TB) use to connect to a server. Depending on the TB version that you use we might send you some instructions

To find what version of (TB) you have go to help - about. Can you mention what version is mentioned there?
