How come my copy doesn't have a control panel
My copy of thunderbird does not have a control panel so that I can make adjustments. In other words, my copy doesn't look like yours.
Chosen solution
No idea who "yours" is that you are comparing to but maybe you are noticing that the newer versions have hidden the MENU BAR and replaced it with the AppMenu button. You can reveal hidden menu bars in most applications, including Thunderbird, by pressing the alt key or F10. When the menu bar appears select View-Toolbars and check the toolbars that you want to be visible all the time. You can get to all the functions using the AppMenu button but they have moved the menu choices around and they no longer match any of the existing documentation. If this is not your question please post more details since there is nothing in Thunderbird called control panel.

Yours was meant to be Thunderbird's displays of what their display looks like in the different "help" pages.
Also, why wasn't pressing the f10 key mentioned in any of the directions or help pages.
Maybe because this is not a Thunderbird shortcut. It is basic computer skills that have been around since the 70's. Thunderbird would have you use the new menu button. I think it stinks and is poorly designed so I avoid it at all costs.
I think you don't know what you're talking about. I've already solved my problem by pressing F10, and with the tool bar, I was able to get Thunderbird working the way I wanted.
Maybe you are confused. You asked a second question about why no mention of F10. I answered both that and your original question. So who does not know what they are talking about? You have to love people that ask for and receive help and then make some rude comments. Your a piece of work!
Yes, just like you! Why don't you get a job.
A job. They are so highly overrated. I tried that once but now prefer messing with simple minded pukes like you.
