Firefox under Ubuntu doesn't work after upgrade to version 22.
I run Ubuntu 12.04 as a dual-boot with Windows. I use the Windows profile for the Ubuntu version of Firefox and Thunderbird. Yesterday Firefox was upgraded to 22. During the Add-on check Firefox stopped working. Since then Firefox doesn't download any websites any more.
It is not a problem of the internet connection, Thunderbird and Chrome work fine. Firefox under Windows, using the same profile, works without problem. Firefox under Ubuntu with the default Ubuntu profile works without any problems. I marked Firefox under Ubuntu for re-installation and applied it, the problem is still present.
So the problem lies somewhere in the shared profile and it doesn't influence the Windows Firefox performance.
When starting Firefox under Ubuntu from a terminal using the Firefox profile manager and using the shared Windows/Ubuntu profile, then I get the following error message:
firefox -profilemanager error: proxmate: An exception occurred. SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected end of data resource://jid1-qphd8urtzwjc2a-at-jetpack/proxmate/lib/main.js 64 Traceback (most recent call last): File "resource://gre/modules/commonjs/sdk/net/xhr.js", line 130, in self._orsc.apply(self, arguments); File "resource://gre/modules/commonjs/sdk/request.js", line 93, in onreadystatechange emit(target, 'complete', response); File "resource://gre/modules/commonjs/sdk/event/core.js", line 83, in emit for each (let item in emit.lazy.apply(emit.lazy, arguments)) { File "resource://gre/modules/commonjs/sdk/event/core.js", line 106, in lazy try { yield listeners[index].apply(target, args); } File "resource://jid1-qphd8urtzwjc2a-at-jetpack/proxmate/lib/main.js", line 205, in exports.main/loadExternalConfig/<.onComplete createPacFromConfig(config); File "resource://jid1-qphd8urtzwjc2a-at-jetpack/proxmate/lib/main.js", line 64, in exports.main/createPacFromConfig config = JSON.parse(config);
Any suggestion how to get rid of this error is much appreciated, because I am not very familiar with Ubuntu.

Hi Shaadea,
I would suggest instead you consider trying
- Safe Mode & if that works post back for more information
Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox - If you believe it is a profile problem and want a quick fix then use Firefox reset
Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
My system is multi boot, but the Linux boots are fairly standard. My Ubuntu 12.04 however uses the Canonical Aurora repositories for the default browser so it is over six weeks since I was on Firefox 22. I did not have a problem when on Canonical Firefox 22, and also have Mozilla Firefox 22 and that is working without problems on Ubuntu 12.04.
Ubuntu users will be in a minority but I do not see masses of threads about problems either on this forum or on the Ubuntu forum. The problem probably is something fairly specific to you rather than being a general one so the methods above may well help you.
- What exactly do you mean by no website loading ?
- Do you get any error message ?
- Presumably alternative browsers work ok
- Does Firefox work ok offline ? & is Firefox able to load files or web pages from your local drive ok ?
Hi john99, thanks for the reply. Safe mode works perfect (using it right now), as well as other browsers (Konqueror). The error message I get is "page takes too long to load, try again later", timed out, and it shows at every page I try to load. FF works perfect offline in normal mode, and also loads pages from local drive perfect. I tried to find out if the cause is one of the extensions, by disabling/enabling one at a time, but even when I disabled all manually (without safe mode) the error still shows, so it must be something else that that causes the problem and that is turned off by safe mode.
You could try turning off hardware acceleration, but I would not expect that to be the cause but it is worth a try. Same with the JIT compiler. It is probably more likely to be a combination of extensions. What happens if you use Firefox in ordinary mode with all extensions disabled.
If it was a Windows system I may wonder if it was something trying to use Firefox for an update that was causing delays.
Safe mode
Safe Mode temporarily affects the following:
All extensions are disabled. The default theme is used, without a persona. The Just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compiler is disabled. The userChrome.css and userContent.css files are ignored. The default toolbar layout is used. Hardware acceleration is disabled.
Safe Mode has no effect on the following:
The status of plugins is not affected. Custom preferences are not affected.
thanks for your help. Whatever it was, it's fixed. I just ran the latest update (5 minutes ago) and everything runs as smooth as it used to be. So I will never know what caused the problem, but I'm pleased it's gone :)
Well we are not finding a solution but at least problems are so far only temporary. Thanks for posting back.
