After an automatic upgrade, all my bookmarks are gone, none of the troubleshooting answers help - how do I get them back?

I just simply turned on my computer and clicked FireFox as always. Looks like some updates installed and now all my bookmarks are gone. I've looked at all related troubleshooting answers and nothing works. How do i get my bookmarks back?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
