thunderbird stops printing while typing and then freezes whole laptop (win7)

Since last update Thunderbird will stop typing as I am writing an email, and then causes the whole laptop to freeze or crash Happened all weekend and still doing the same thing. Frustrating since I have to restart the laptop PLUS lost the email I was composing. How to fix this issue?

Does it freeze in safe/troubleshoot mode (hold Shift when launching TB)?
