when click on firefox icon, am told URL is not valid; don't know how to fix

downloaded again. did not help. when went to firefox icon, google search engine popped up. stopped that, but now can't use firefox at all. keep getting message that URL is not valid. in settings, firefox is listed as default browser.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that works.

  • Windows: hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox
  • Mac: hold down the Options key while starting Firefox

You can check the home page setting.

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
