By the way, why did you lose your bookmarks during the Windows update? Was it one of those major updates that moves all your data to an archival C:\Windows.old folder? (That's a temporary folder that gets removed after 4 weeks.) If so, you could grab your last Firefox bookmark backup from that folder instead of generating a new one.
To explore that copy of the old user folder, you need to turn on viewing of hidden files and folders: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files
Then look for
C:\Windows.old\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
If you find data there -- one or more semi-randomly-named folders -- check inside for a bookmarkbackups folder containing compressed backup files. The names are coded with the date as of which they were made. To restore one of these, I suggest copying it to a more convenient location.
Or with a bit more work you can restore the entire folder, but I don't know whether Xmarks will work even with the old settings.

The Mozilla Add-ons site is enforcing some new compatibility policies that may not be strictly necessary for all users. You may be able to install directly from XMarks' site: http://download.xmarks.com/download/firefox
Does that work?
NO ! doesn't download, stopped by FF error message ..

Which message? Normally you get a panel that requires you to allow downloads from sites you haven't installed any add-ons from before, then you approve the installation to start, then you may see a list of permissions or other panel to ok, then finally Firefox should tell you it will take effect on restart. Is the error during that process or afterwards?
Here's a screenshot of the sequence I described in my last post.
FF 55.02 64 bit has a message that appears in the upper right hand of the screen when downloading XMARks. It say this XMARKS is not compatible with this FF version and FF stopped the Download?????. So why did FF not provide a transfer of 20 + years of bookmarks????????????
What you saw in my screenshot is what I saw. (I didn't restart Firefox.)
How does Xmarks work? Does it synchronize to Firefox's native bookmark system? You could use a multi-step process:
(1) Use a "portable" 32-bit version of Firefox 54.0.1 to install Xmarks and get your bookmarks
(2) Output a bookmark backup file from portable Firefox
(3) Restore the bookmark backup to your regular installation of Firefox
Unless there is a new version of Xmarks that runs on 64-bit Firefox 55 it will be a one-way trip
Here's how:
Portable Firefox 54.0.1
This folder lists numerous different language versions, so download the one you prefer:
Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 54.0.1 at SourceForge.net
You can run that EXE to install Firefox Portable into a folder where it runs completely independent from your existing settings. I created an FxPortable folder in my downloads where I keep different versions I might need from time to time.
Install the XMarks extension and Sync
I think you need to exit out of Firefox 55 to run Firefox portable. Then install the extension from either the Add-ons site or the XMarks site.
Trigger synchronization and wait for bookmarks to completely populate.
Create a Bookmark Backup File
This article has the steps: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. I suggest saving the file in a convenient location such as Documents or Desktop.
Then you can exit out of Firefox portable.
Restore Bookmark Backup to Firefox 55
This process will wipe any bookmarks you've created since you installed Firefox 55, so if there are any non-duplicate bookmarks you want to save, add the Optional steps:
1. (Optional) Export your current bookmarks to HTML format. This can be re-imported later as additional bookmarks without wiping your XMarks set. Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
2. Restore the bookmark backup you created earlier. When following the steps in this article, you'll use Choose File to grab that JSON file from the convenient location where you saved it. Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
3. (Optional) Re-import the additional bookmarks from the HTML file you created: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file. Those should appear in an Imported Bookmarks folder either on the Bookmarks Menu or in "Other Bookmarks." You can keep them there or reorganize them into more suitable locations, then delete the Imported folder.

I appears that FF stopped the download yesterday! When I used IE to download it worked great. I'm not an expert , but I'm familiar with FF and downloading. I swear to the Almighty that FF Blocked it yesterday! SEQUENCE: I was using FF and went to ADD-ONs and Download. After downloading I started XMARKS and it accepted my Username , but as soon as I begun typing my password it went to BLOCK??? Everything is ok Today. So, I'm getting ready to see the end of the world tomorrow!(ECLIPSE),
PS; kidding... Ray Thanks..
Good luck with the totality. Make sure you have a full tank of gas -- and an empty bladder. I suspect the traffic jams will be epic.
My elitebook was getting sloppy. So I did a system restore with archival of most personal data on the desktop. However, the file "jason " was missing along with Xmarks???About as far as I go into this stuff...
Ray
Also, the nice pictures at startup was missing , I guess edge has something to do with this. I fiddled with Themes and such and now they are back , however they don't change as often!
