When I accepted Firefox's invitation to update to 9.0.1, the setup program was downloaded without giving me the opportunity to choose where to save it. Once downloaded, it offered the option to install it later, which I took. Where can I now find the setup program so that I can keep a copy without downloading it again?

Hi,

You may be able to find the path to the downloaded file in Tools (Alt + T) > Downloads manager. Alternatively press Ctrl + J.

You can also see the downloads folder location in Tools (Alt + T) > Options > General.

Unfortunately I was not able to check your solution properly:

  1. By the time I got it, Firefox had deceitfully installed the update without warning.
  2. My default download setting is "Always ask me" - But it did not.

I think that Firefox treats its own downloaded updates as a special class. It does not follow the normal rules. I guess it stores the updates in a temporary location until they are installed and then deletes them. If I knew where the temporary location is, I could find them and save a permanent copy before installation

The Downloads window shows only the user initiated downloads like when Firefox installer is downloaded manually from the website. I think the Firefox automatic updates downloads the temporary files into the updates folder in the Firefox installation directory or the profile directory as a .mar file and deletes it after the upgrade. Even if the file exists, I think it wouldn't be useful.
